Things You Should Know When Renting An Apartment

If you are going to be moving out on your own for the first time and renting, or you have owned your own house up until now and have recently found yourself in the position of renting, there are things you should know. Renting a home comes with some perks and with some responsibilities. If you haven't rented before, then you want to educate yourself on everything you should know and this article will be a big help to you:

You don't have to worry about repair issues

When you are a renter, you get to pass on all of those repair issues over to the manager. If you have something come up with the plumbing, electrical, roofing or anything else, then you can get it taken care of with a simple call to the manager, or the maintenance personnel if this is how things are set up in your lease agreement.

You need to abide by the terms of you lease

When you sign a lease for a certain amount of time, you will be able to remain in that rental unit for the duration of the lease, as long as you don't violate any of the terms in it. If you do violate the lease, then you can be given notice to vacate the premises. Unless otherwise stated in the lease, your rent can also not be raised while you are currently in the lease. Once it comes time for the lease to be renewed, then the terms can be changed and this includes the amount of the rent. If you decide not to renew the lease, then you can go month to month. However, you won't have protection meaning you can be given notice to vacate at any time, even if you haven't done anything to violate the rental agreement.

You will need written permission for any changes to be made

When you are renting, you can't make anything that would be considered as a permanent change to the house or the rest of the property without prior written approval being given to you by the manager. This means you can't remove any of the foliage, you can't paint, change the flooring, add or remove fencing or do anything else considered to be a permanent change, even if it would increase the home's value. You can't even have an alarm system installed in the house if it will be installed by drilling holes into any of the walls.
